About Corfu Town

Corfu Town has a population of around 30,000 and is the centre of economic, political and cultural life for the Corfiots.  It is the chief town of the Prefecture of Corfu, and as such, is the location of most of the public authorities (banks, law-courts, prisons, hospital, consulates, the National Tourist Organisation etc.)  The large number of tourists who visit Corfu Town each year give it a cosmopolitan air.  Shops and other establishments dedicated to the tourist industry are to be found all over the town, together with quaint tavernas and top class restaurants, old style coffee shops and modern outdoor cafes.  Discos and bars open late into the night.  The picture below right shows one of the many side streets littered with shops.

Corfu Town is accessible from Acharavi by car, bus or via an organised trip.  It is not advisable to use a moped to get into town as the roads can be steep in places—a larger motorcycle would be okay.  The journey takes about 45 minutes over the Trumpeta mountain range and around one hour via the east coast road.  The latter of which provides some dramatic scenery of the east coast of the island and Albania.  At the top of the mountain range, either side of the village of Trumpeta are tremendous views of the north of the island and, about 100 metres later, the south.  The roads can be very busy and you will need to be patient.  It is not unusual to be stuck behind a row of traffic following a coach or lorry.  Be sensible when overtaking.  The locals know the roads !!!!
