Accommodation in Acharavi varies depending on who you travel to Corfu with.

A tour operator usually provides either hotels or studios/apartments (some with pools).  Either way, accommodation on Corfu (and in Greece as a whole) can be fairly basic.  For example, shower-curtains are fairly rare in studios and apartments so don’t be surprised if you don’t find one in the bathroom.

The electricity supply is sometimes a little erratic in the busy summer months and short power-cuts are not unheard of.

Accommodation
Typical Self Catering Accommodation

You will sometimes find a kettle and toaster along with a 2-ring cooker in self catering accommodation provided by the tour operators.  However, many of the local travel agents providing accommodation in the Acharavi area do tend to provide more in the way of facilities.

Bathroom

In almost all accommodation there will be a little bin next to the toilet.  This is for tissue paper which must not be flushed down the toilet.  Unless you have been to Greece before this system can be a little strange, however, adhere to it !  A new sewage infrastructure has been installed and will be live very soon so the problem will go away !

In Greece you are expected to buy your own toilet paper although one roll should be provided on our arrival.  On the subject of bathrooms, towels can be quite small and should not be used to mop up water splashed onto the floor from the shower.  You may want to supplement with a towel of your own and you will need to bring your own beach towels.

Typical Bathroom

Electricity

The voltage is 220—so all appliances from the UK will work here.  The plug sockets are 2 pinned so you will need an adapter

Water

The water is safe to drink but has a high mineral content.  You are advised to drink bottled water.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can be a problem.  The issue is often dramatised by people who do not take precautions BEFORE being bitten.  There are a few simple ways to stop getting bitten in the first place.  Here are some tips:

1) Buy a mosquito machine from the local supermarket.

2) DO NOT leave lights on with windows open at night.  Mosquitoes are attracted to the light.

3) Spray your room before you go out at night with mosquito spray.

4) Shake your sheets before you go to bed and tuck the sheets in at the end.

5) Use a body spray (available from supermarkets) - Especially useful whilst you are out having dinner as dusk is their most active time.

Getting Accommodation

If you have already booked your holiday still take some time to read about getting accommodation in Acharavi.

A popular option is to book with a travel agent based on the island.  Castaway Travel are the longest established agent in Acharavi.  Most local travel agents provide good quality accommodation, sometimes with those little added extras like irons/ironing-boards.  A huge benefit booking direct is the taxi transfer from the airport to the front door of your accommodation.  You’ll be sipping ouzo on the balcony whilst others from your flight are still enjoying their unexpected Grand Island Tour on the coach !

You will also benefit from the experience of people who actually live here and have done for many years.  With respect to the huge tour operators, often the holiday representatives lack the detailed knowledge of the island and things to do.  As far as flights are concerned - the internet has made this process so easy over the last few years and booking a flight is now a few mouse clicks away.
